São Joåo Park

A fabulous recreational and barbecue area!

This recreational forest reserve features a
covered picnic area, a playground, fences
with animals, a Forest, a post Disclosure
of birdwatching, pathways of maintenance,
an area of traditional games, a MultiSport
field and a croquet field.

Holy Ghost Chapel

A small holy ghost chapel
in each the upper and lower village

There is a park built where the1720
lava flow destroyed the original church.

This park is called the Largo de Sao Joao;
it has picnic facilitiesaplayground and wildlife.

At the Seashore of the upper village there is
the Ponte de Sao Joao where there is a
volleyball courtshowers and picnic facilities
adjacent to a point that projects out into
the ocean and is home to small tidal
pool that is used as a local swimming hole.

10 - São João Church

Igreja de São João Baptista, São João,

The single-bell tower parochial church
is in the lower district in close proximity
to the small sea port.

It was extensively renovated following
historical earthquakes, with a tiled
front-facade constructed over quarried rock.

A secondary chapel was constructed
within the past decades to support the
upper congregation in a modernist style.

A park was also constructed around
the lava flows that destroyed the
original church (in 1720)
