Whale watching is the natural extension of Pico Island’s whaling tradition

Yes, Pico is undoubtedly one of the 10 best spots for whale watching in the world!

To be in the Azores and especially as guests at Miradouro Da Papalva on Pico Island, provides an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy observing these majestic mammals.

For sure the best location in the Azores for Whale Watching is Lajes do Pico.

With little tourist frequentation, high quantity and diversity of Whales observed, little visual pollution, with the mountain of Pico as background… How does it get any better?

GUEST INTERVIEW

Listen to Anthony Cottrell´s interview with Miradouro Da Papalva guests, Adriana and Adrian, as they describe their Whale Watching  experience with long established tour operators, Espaco Talassa…

In pico, there are several great options when it comes to selecting a Whale Watching/ Tour company.

Espaco Talassa (based in Lajes) makes sure that prior to embarking on your Whale Watching trip, and included in the price, you’ll enjoy spending approximately 30 minutes as an introduction learning biology and animal behaviour, whale hunting story and ecology.

Why is Lages do Pico
a great place?

Today, Lajes on the island of Pico is one of the best whale watching locations in the world in regard to the quality and diverity of the species encountered.

Far from the agitation of other Azorean ports, where it is also possible to embark on whale and dolphin watching tours, Lajes is much closer to the observation zones.

On average Lajes is 10 minutes away as opposed to 30 minutes from Horta, Madalena or Ponta Delgada.

Being away from the others Whale Watching options, at Lajes you will seldom encounter other boats, which means the animals are less stressed and can be observed in peace and quiet.

White washed villages facing the sea dominated by the presence of the Pico mountain form the breathtaking terrestrial background which will further enhance your experience.

In Lajes do Pico, tradition is also very much alive and it is not rare to encounter ancient whaling boats training for the weekend regattas that take place during the summer.

The architecture is reminiscent of 19th century American whaling ports and it is possible to also visit the ancient factory, the museum and the observation tower of ‘Queimada’ all within 1km walking distance.

What you need to know:
